Sometimes My Prayer Is Just “Jesus”

There are moments when I whisper His name because I don’t really have anything else to say.

Often, it happens as I’m marching up the stairs for the umpteenth time. Paul needs to go to the bathroom again. Ruth woke up early from her nap.

Other times, it’s right in my living room. When my children have decided that they both need the exact same toy. Or one grabs a toy they know the other one loooovvveeesss and shoves it in their face.

And I can feel it happening.

The overstimulation.

The frustration.

The thought I was trying to hold onto disappearing because someone needs something from me again. Rereading the same sentence for the tenth time because my attention is that precious.

Even right now, as I’m writing this, Paul keeps seeking my attention.

And honestly?

Sometimes all I can do is whisper, “Jesus.”

Not because I have a beautifully structured prayer ready.

Not because I’ve finally gotten myself into a quiet place where I can thoughtfully sit before the Lord with my Bible, my journal, and a perfectly organized list of things to pray about.

Sometimes I whisper “Jesus” because I have no other words.

It usually comes out as an exhale.

Jesus.

It’s me asking Him to be with me.

To give me what I don’t have in that moment.

Patience.

Grace.

Sometimes joy or excitement.

Sometimes the willingness to let go of my own bitterness and self-centeredness and to remember that I, in fact, am not the center of the universe—even when it feels like I am, so often, the sun in my household.

I probably whisper His name at least once a day.

Because I literally cannot do this on my own.

I cannot parent in my own strength. I cannot love perfectly in my own strength. I cannot continually choose patience and grace and joy in my own strength.

I’m a fallen human being who desperately needs the grace of God every single day.

And maybe that’s part of what I’m learning to love about prayer.

It doesn’t have to be perfect.

It doesn’t have to be structured.

It can be interrupted.

Actually, maybe that’s exactly what prayer is meant to be like in this season.

Because sometimes I imagine talking to Jesus a little like talking to another mom.

You start telling her something, and then one of your kids interrupts.

So you stop.

You handle whatever needs handling.

Then you come back and try to remember what you were saying.

Then someone interrupts again.

And you lose your train of thought.

So you backtrack.

You start again.

You get interrupted.

You come back.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Maybe that’s what prayer looks like sometimes.

Not one long, uninterrupted conversation where I finally get everything right.

But a thousand little returns.

Jesus.

I need You.

Jesus.

Help me.

Jesus.

Give me patience.

Jesus.

I don’t want to be bitter.

Jesus.

I need Your grace.

Jesus.

I can’t do this on my own.

And He doesn’t seem bothered by my interruptions.

He doesn’t need me to come back with perfectly formed sentences.

He simply invites me to come back.

Again.

And again.

And again.

So if today your prayers feel scattered…

If you don’t have the words…

If you got interrupted halfway through your thought…

If all you can manage is one whispered name—

maybe that’s enough for this moment.

Maybe you can simply exhale:

Jesus.

And then, when life interrupts you again, come back.

Again.

And again.

And again.
